Hi, I'm Kim Hicks.
Releasing words onto a blank canvas before the painting begins has always been a part of my creative process. This is my space to celebrate, dream, and let go of what no longer serves me. You’ll find my handwritten poetry, life stories, and inspirational Quotes beneath the paint—it's my personal journal that inspires the artwork that follows.
How art and I came to be....
A health scare nearly two decades ago ignited my creative journey into art and has since served as my guiding light.
I had always laced up my runners and hit the trails to dream, clear my head, or just breathe in the scent of the pines. This time, my runners were not an option. My insightful hubby began to ask me a series of questions to uncover what else sparked a light besides a trail run.
The next day, he arrived home with paintbrushes, paint, and canvases, marking the beginning of my artistic journey. My first canvas measured 30x40 inches, and I vividly recall staring at the paint and this huge canvas, unsure of how to mix colors or utilize the various brushes. With a black felt pen in my hand, I began to write and pour my emotions onto the canvas, expressing everything I felt as I began to recover. Then, as easily as I had released those words onto the canvas, I began to paint over them. I became lost for hours, covering all that I had written with flowers of every shape and size. It was in those creative moments that I began to heal and this is how art and I came to be.....
This has continued to be my creative practice with every painting over the years. I t will always be a space for me to celebrate ,dream and release what no longer serves me. I t is a practice that always allows me to come home to me. I truly believe Art holds a remarkable ability to heal and nourishes the soul.
As an intuitive painter, my art invites you to explore the essence of Kim Hicks. Inspiration strikes from simple moments—a stroll along the beach, a walk down the street, or wandering through the forest. I rarely rely on photos for reference; instead, I let my creativity flow freely to capture the world as I see it.
A wee glimpse into
my art practice.....
A little more about me.
I was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I was surrounded by my mother’s beautiful art .My interest in fashion led me to earn a degree in Human Ecology from the University of Manitoba. After graduating, I worked as an apparel buyer for a Canadian retailer, further fueling my passion for design, color, and fashion.
Relocating to Vancouver Island ,with my husband and having children rekindled my love for color, as their imaginative drawings were filled with a whole crayon box of colour. Over the years, I explored various creative avenues, including painting furniture, creating a school mural, and experimenting with rug hooking. A subsequent move to Calgary Alberta, provided me with new inspiration and an opportunity to embrace my “Prairie Girl Spirit.” Alongside painting, I also returned to merchandising in local stores.
Recently back on Vancouver Island, I have rediscovered my love for painting and have been encouraged by friends, family, and local artists. In my cozy studio at my West Coast home, I imagine dream, and create, always eager for the possibilities my next painting might hold. I draw inspiration from everyday life and believe that by taking a moment to breathe, we can reveal our true selves. It is my hope that my art inspires you and that the colors I use brightens your day.
